Table of contents
Introduction
If you're using the ABAP Environment, a new ABAP Development Tools version awaits you every three months. In this short episode, we'll look at how to find your current version, configure the automatic update, and perform the version update.
Version
To do this, let's first start our Eclipse installation, select the workspace, and start the IDE. Under the Help menu item, we find the "About Eclipse IDE" entry. On this page, you'll find an overview of the installed plugins and components. If you click the ADT icon, you'll see all the versions of the various components. This isn't the overall version, but rather the version of the various components within the ADT plugin. Examples of such components include Data Preview, Debugging, or DDIC. If you click the "Installation Details" button, you'll find an overview of the major versions. In this case, version 3.50.1 in the current installation.
Settings
Now, let's go to the Eclipse settings. If you search for "Update" there, you'll find the "Automatic Updates" section with the corresponding settings. Here, you can set the check for updates in the upper area, and directly below, how often the system checks for updates. In this case, we check for an update once a week. Under the download options, you can choose whether to download immediately or just receive a notification.
Manual Update
In the menu, you'll find the "Check for Updates" option. This allows you to manually initiate the search and update, which we'll do in this case. The system will then check the various software pages and look for new versions for your installation. If new versions are found, you'll receive an overview of the available updates. In this case, there's a new version of the ABAP Development Tools, the ABAP Cleaner, and Eclipse itself. Here you can see the new version for ADT 3.52.1. So, let's confirm the update of all components and run the update once.
From time to time, we may be asked whether we want to trust certain components. If these are the standard components of your installation, then confirm accordingly. Once the installation is complete, we'll be prompted to restart the IDE and greeted with the new version. In the next step, the system will notify us of the outdated workspace. Click "Continue" to continue. The workspace will be updated to the new version.
Summary
After the update and after starting, we get an overview of the new features of the ABAP Development Tools, in this case for version 3.52. Finally, let's take a look at the installed version. The update is now complete, and we can continue working on the current system.
You now know how to find the current version of the ABAP Development Tools, configure automatic updates, update your system, and update the workspace to the latest version. So thank you for watching, and see you next time.
