Software-Heroes Live
The first videos on YouTube are now live. What's planned and where are we headed? Read more in this short article.
Table of contents
In this article, we look at the content strategy for the YouTube channel, what's planned for the near future, and whether there will be regular videos.
Introduction
When we talk to trainees and students today, we usually get the same answer when it comes to acquiring knowledge. They search a lot on video platforms and consume audiovisual content to access current content. Articles and blogs usually come second among young people. The situation is different for the current generation of developers; they mostly acquire knowledge through blogs or SAP Press books.
A major advantage of reading is also the ability to search. We can search for answers faster in digital documents than in a video, where we don't even know 100% whether what we're looking for is actually included.
YouTube
In this chapter, we'll look at everything related to the new channel.
Possibilities
Therefore, we would like to open up a second way to make content available to the community. Videos can be a great addition in areas where we want to demonstrate and explain a process. In principle, this also works with GIFs, but the audio track is missing there again.
Current
So far, there are 4 videos on the channel, which are primarily intended to introduce the channel and its major topics.
- Teaser - A short teaser about the channel and its introductory content.
- Challenge - Current challenges when learning new technologies and where the journey is headed.
- Install ADT - How can you install the ABAP Development Tools quickly and easily, and which settings help you at work. And here's a tip for the DSAG ADT guide.
- abapGit Plugin - How do you use the abapGit plugin to save your source code in a resource and make it available to others.
Planning
What content will be featured on the channel in the future? We would like to start several series on important topics. Firstly, we still see very often that the actual IDE, the ABAP Development Tools, hasn't really caught on yet, and many developers are still using SE80. In addition to the usual "Why is Eclipse better?", we also want to discuss help with using it and what valuable tools are actually available there. There should be something for everyone here.
The second stream is intended to be very practical; here we take on the role of a full-stack developer who is tasked with providing software for a recycling company. We will attempt to map the company's entire lifecycle and provide data and applications for all areas. We will address all aspects of modern development in this complex example. Therefore, preparing the data model is somewhat more complex in order to have material for all eventualities.
In the third stream, we will address general topics related to Software Heroes, i.e., the website, tools, and open source. This will likely include some tests of open source software and plugins.
Deployment
We will initially only make the videos available in English, as the effort required to create a video is currently quite high. There's a lot to learn in the coming months to optimize the creation process and speed it up again. To give you a current figure, the "Install ADT" video, for example, took about 8-10 hours to complete. This involves coming up with the idea, writing a script, recording, creating the sound, and finally editing and generating the material.
For this reason, we currently don't have a regular schedule for publishing new videos; instead, a new one will appear as soon as it's ready. The focus here remains on blogs and articles.
Category
There is now also a new category for blogs, which will refer to the YouTube channel. However, you must subscribe to this additional category if you want to receive information about the news. There we will publish accompanying material that is relevant to the videos or related to current topics.
Conclusion
Feel free to watch the videos and leave us a comment, or feedback if you notice something we can improve. The topic is still quite new, and we are still trying to find the best way to produce high-quality videos.
